As a part of CapRadio’s inaugural Student Musician Showcase Week, we welcomed the Rio Americano High School Jazz "tRio" into the studios on Monday for a live performance and interview.

The “tRio” consists of three talented musicians: Jake Nalangan (piano), Maddy Hill (bass) and Joseph Bly (drums).

All three have received various solo awards and honors independently through the Sacramento State Traditional Jazz Festival (best high school pianist, bassist and drummer), and the group was one of six in the nation selected to the 2017 Monterey Next Gen Festival.

Joseph and Jake recently traveled to Savannah, Georgia, to participate in the Swing Central Festival in a separate big band, the AM jazz ensemble.

Maddy also plays in the popular punk band Freecandy!, which recently toured Northern California and the Bay Area.

The members of the band individually have worked with esteemed musicians Wycliffe Gordon, Jason Marsalis, Sullivan Fortner, Craig Faniani, Reggie Graham and others.

The “tRio” is under the direction of Maxwell Kiesner and Joshua Murray.
