Current City Council member Jeff Harris has represented the area since 2014, but he couldn’t run for reelection because he doesn’t live in the newly drawn district.
District 3 includes South Natomas, Gardenland and Northgate.
The district drastically changed during the redistricting process. It went from snaking westward from East Sacramento to the River District and South Natomas to losing East Sacramento and the River District entirely.
As the representative for District 3, the council member votes on city policies, ordinances and land uses. The member also weighs in on Sacramento’s budget and contracts.
The council member serves on committees covering topics like transportation and additionally gets a say in hiring the city manager, city attorney, city treasurer and city clerk. The term lasts for four years.
Voters can choose from two candidates who advanced from the June primary:
Karina Talamantes
The Chief of Staff to outgoing District 1 Council member and Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby. Talamantes, 33, finished a four-year term on the Sacramento County Board of Education in June.
A former career counselor, she played a big role in bringing the multi-million dollar aquatic complex to Natomas as well as the California Northstate University teaching hospital.
Michael Lynch
The CEO and co-founder of the Sacramento-based nonprofit Improve Your Tomorrow, which works to erase the college opportunity gap for young men of color. Lynch, 33, graduated from Valley High School in South Sacramento.
Lynch previously worked in the California State Capitol as a policy consultant and legislative advisor for about six years.
