Sacramento County supervisors have voiced support for increasing the amount of money that can be donated to campaigns.
Supervisor Sue Frost proposed the change, which also could include better reporting for certain types of donations.
"The way the money flows with these independent expenditures, in many cases, it's difficult to track where that money comes from or where it goes,” she said.
In board of supervisors races, people and organizations may contribute $250 in non-election years, and $1,000 in election years.
Supervisor Don Nottoli, who is not seeking re-election, said the current amounts are reasonable. “I think the limits that are in place make for a fairly-level playing field,” he said.
Supervisor Phil Serna asked if a portion of an increase in campaign funds could be used for community events like parades. "It takes a little pressure off the very-limited discretionary income we get per district, which is subject to change every June,” he said.
Elections for the sheriff, district attorney and assessor do not have contribution limits.
Any change by the board would be the first since 1986.
