A longer commute is in store for some Sacramento bicyclists and pedestrians.
The Jibboom Street Bridge will be closed for several months, starting at the first of the year. The bridge crosses the American River and connects Richards Boulevard with Discovery Park.
Jeff Leatherman, the Sacramento County Regional Parks director, said some detours will be available.
"The two detours that we're recommending are the pipe bridge (aka the Blue Diamond Bridge), which is near 160 and 18th Street to cross the river there," Leatherman said, "and depending on where people are coming from, they can also use the Guy West or the H Street Bridge if they're coming down river from east of Discovery Park."
Sacramento Area Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Jim Brown said the delays highlight the lack of access for bicyclists and pedestrians over the American River.
"We've already started doing this with the Sacramento River," Brown said. "The Broadway Bridge is an entirely new crossing over the Sacramento River. The Jibboom Street closure points out that we need to be doing the same thing with the American River.
The bridge will be resurfaced and repainted. Work could last into May depending on the weather.
