(AP) - A trial is underway in the case of three Santa Clara County correctional officers accused in a fatal jail-cell beating.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that testimony began Tuesday in the trial of the three men accused of beating Michael Tyree to death in 2015 and then attempting to cover up the crime. Officers Jereh Lubrin, Matthew Farris and Rafael Rodriguez have been charged with murder.
Tyree died from internal bleeding and suffered significant liver and spleen damage. An investigation determined he had been beaten hours before he was found in his cell. Tyree, who was serving time for misdemeanor theft and drug possession, had been housed by himself in a section of the jail reserved for inmates who are in protective custody or have special needs.
