Amador High School completed its historic season Saturday, coming up short of a California Division VI-AA state championship. The Buffaloes lost 38-13 to Rancho Christian High School at a neutral-site game in southern California.
Regardless, the team returned home to Sutter Creek to a hero's welcome Sunday night with people honking their horns and residents lining the streets to applaud.
The boys football team had never won even one section title in the school's 105-year existence — until three weeks ago, when they beat Bradshaw Christian.
They then beat Lincoln of San Francisco and Mendota to advance to the championship game.
St. Mary's of Stockton, Del Oro, Pleasant Valley of Chico and Oakdale also played for state football championships in their divisions.
Oakdale's Division 3-A game wasn't close with a 47-0 drubbing of Bishop's.
But Pleasant Valley's 4-A championship game went to overtime with the Vikings beating St. Anthony 50-49.
San Clemente beat Del Oro 22-17 for the Div I-A title.
In the open division, St. John Bosco beat De La Salle 56-33.
In 1–AA, Cathedral Catholic went unbeaten (15-0) with a 38-35 overtime win vs. St. Mary’s.
In Division 2-A, Sierra Canyon also went unbeaten (16-0) with a 4-40 win over Serra.
In Division 2–AA, Madison beat Valley Christian 21-17.
Paraclete beat Menlo-Atherton 39-21 for the Division 3–AA title.
In Division 4–AA, Campolindo beat Bakersfield Christian 31-7.
In Division 5–AA, Bishop O’Dowd won 43-24 over Valley View.
In Division 5-A, McClymonds beat La Jolla Country Day 20-17.
Division 6–A, St. Patrick-St. Vincent beat previously-undefeated Strathmore 29-28.
