The owner of Raley's announced plans this week to open a new grocery store called "Market 5-One-5" in downtown Sacramento.
The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says the store — at 10th and R streets — will take inspiration from farmers markets.
"It will emphasize a lot of specialty, healthy, organic products but in an approachable atmosphere, at least that's what officials are saying at this point," says Sorich. "This store will fill a portion of the former California Office Furniture property on R Street. And it is expected to open in spring 2017."
Michael Teel, proprietor of Raley's, will also own this new store. But officials say Teel will operate Market 5-One-5 independently of Raley's.
If you're thinking about getting into the beer or wine business, Elk Grove may be able to help you out. The city is offering grants for brewery, winery and cidery startups. Sorich says the first grant was awarded this week to Flatland Brewing Company.
"These grants are designed to provide startup capital and defray some permitting costs," Sorich says. "Flatland got $5,000. Now officials are not dealing with an unlimited budget here. But they say that they do want to attract businesses that could bring more people and, of course, jobs to Elk Grove."
Elk Grove's brewery scene is growing. Other new breweries in the works include Dreaming Dog Brewery, a 6,500 square-foot project expected to open next year.
A new luxury movie theater geared toward adults is getting closer to opening at Folsom's Palladio at Broadstone. It's called Palladio Luxe Cinema. Sorich says the theater will be open to all ages until 6 p.m.
"And then after that it will become a 21 and older venue," says Sorich. "There will be beer and wine on tap and food as well. Guests will be able to dine at their seats while watching those movies. Current movie theaters have to compete with what you can get from just sitting on your comfortable couch and watching Netflix."
Palladio Luxe is scheduled to open on November 18th. It'll also offer luxury seating with large chairs.
A Sacramento clothing designer with some well-known clients is expanding. Ryan Douglas Hammonds, who operates the R. Douglas shop on 12th Street, is adding a site in Fresno. Sorich says Hammonds gets a lot of client referrals since he serves many California political leaders.
"His downtown showroom is near the state Capitol so this isn't too surprising," says Sorich. "And this is interesting because it's easy to sort of dismiss Sacramento's fashion scene. But this is another sign that we do have fashion designers who are expanding and getting attention beyond the Sacramento area."
Hammonds other clients include Kings President Chris Granger and Sacramento artist David Garibaldi. An average price-point for an R. Douglas two-piece suit is about $1,000.
