The Sacramento Police Department is investigating the death of a man who was being transferred from police custody to the Sacramento County Jail.
Police Sergeant Justin Brown says officers detained Edward Currie Saturday night.
"The original stop was near the 2200 block of Northgate Blvd and our officers were basically performing drug and gang enforcement in the area and made contact with the subject. They conducted a search and located drugs in his possession."
Brown says the man was going through medical screening at the jail when he collapsed. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
A drug overdose is one possible cause of death.
"We'll definitely take a look at that through the investigation. After the findings are released by the county coroner and the toxicology reports are released, we'll be able to pinpoint exactly what the cause of the subject's death was."
The police department's internal affairs, homicide, and crime scene investigations units are investigating the death, along with the City Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney and Coroner's office.
