The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says one of its deputies noticed a car with expired registration near Manzanita Avenue and Winding Way around noon Thursday.
Deputy Tony Turnbull says the deputy attempted to get the driver to pull over, but the driver sped up in an attempt to get away.
During the pursuit, the driver stopped long enough to let one passenger out, who surrendered.
The driver continued on until he stopped in the middle of Cypress Avenue west of Garfield Avenue.
Deputies say the suspect had a handgun, took cover behind his car and began shooting at deputies.
Deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect.
Sacramento Metro Fire responded to a call for medical assistance and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.
One officer had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Adrian Berry says he was visiting his mother at her home in Carmichael just before noon when the shooting happened.
"I was sitting in my living room and me and my mom were just sitting there eating a Klondike Bar watching TV and we heard all this shooting," says Berry.
Berry says he heard multiple pops and asked his mother what was happening. He says he opened the garage to take a look outside.
"Saw all these cops out there and you could see the dead body laying over there," he says.
Per sheriff's department policy, three deputies are on paid administrative leave. The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division are conducting the investigation.
