A Folsom student Snehaa Ganesh Kumar made it to the ninth round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee before being eliminated Thursday evening.

The 12-year-old seventh grader from Folsom Middle School was one of the final six spellers.

She was eliminated after mispelling the word "oflag" -- a German noun meaning "a prison camp for captured enemy officers."

Vanya Shivashankar,13, from Kansas and Gokul Venkatachalam,14, from Missouri finished the competition as co-champions after exhausting the 25 words reserved for the final three spellers without stumbling. Before last year, there hadn't been a tie since 1962.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
