The King Fire still smoldering about 60 miles east of Sacramento is expected to be fully contained by Wednesday.
The U.S. Forest service says the fire, which began more than three weeks ago near Pollock Pines, has burned nearly 98,000 acres. It's 98 percent contained Tuesday.
There are 1,700 firefighters mopping up. A team is working to stabilize the soil in the area and to assess the post-fire threats to life, safety and natural and cultural resources in the National Forest.
