The California Highway Patrol says the hole was found in a construction zone near the westernmost exit in Truckee.
“A big rig that was dropping a load of asphalt felt something kind of weird with his truck," says Officer Peter Mann with the CHP. "When he got to look he had noticed a set of his back tires had actually punched through the surface.”
Mann says sinkholes in the area are rare and it’s unclear what caused this one. Cal Trans filled in the hole, which was also three-feet wide and all lanes were open again at 2:30 this afternoon.
