The ordinance would prohibit smoking at the municipal golf course and tennis courts, the public bikeway, the skate park, the BMX track, and the Big League Dreams sports complex.
City Council Member Debby Moorhead says she and her constituents support the ban.
"I have two grandchildren. I don't want them to smoke. I don't think I would enjoy going to a park and standing there with my grandchildren while somebody is, you know, less than five feet away from them smoking a cigarette," she says.
Moorhead says her email has been unanimous in support of the ordinance.
"I've gotten a few email and their opinion is that they would like to see any smoking, anything banned from the park. They are very much in favor of the fact that we even have it on the agenda." - Debby Moorhead, Manteca City Council member
All the members of the Manteca City Council are non-smokers.
Only a few California cities ban smoking in parks. Among them are San Jose, Burbank, and Los Angeles.
