A rally was held at the state Capitol today by the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project. The organization was founded to help young Latino students pursue roles in state government and higher education.
Anna Caballero, Secretary of the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency, addressed the need for greater Latino representation in a state with an increasingly Hispanic population.
"According to the census reports the Latino population in California will be the majority by the year 2014. We currently have 24 Latino state legislators serving in California. That's a fifth of the seats available. We should be close to half,” said Caballero.
Students participating in the rally spent the day in the Capitol attending mock legislative hearings and meeting with policymakers.
