The construction company hired to build the arena has reached what’s known as a “project labor agreement” with the region’s Building Trades Council. It mandates that Turner Construction will hire union members and pay union wages.
“This agreement formalizes a relationship, a partnership, between Turner and the Building Trades, that will provide us with great comfort and certainty that this building will get done on time and on schedule in October of 2016,” Kings President Chris Granger said at a Wednesday news conference at the Downtown Plaza site of the future arena.
The announcement drew strong criticism from opponents of project labor agreements. “It’s discrimination. It’s costly. Taxpayers are paying for half of this project, and they’ve just given this away to the unions,” said Kevin Dayton from Roseville-based Labor Issues Solutions.
The agreement includes provisions banning strikes and lockouts. It'll also ensure that at least 60 percent of the workers live in the Sacramento region.
