The Sacramento Fire Department is replacing four of its older engines. Tuesday firefighters christened a new engine at Station 56 on 47th Avenue.
Firefighter Chris Harvey says the old engines have each traveled 200,000 miles.
"They will then be placed in reserve. It will still be used as an engine," says Harvey. "If we need it, if one of the other engines is being repaired or is having some issues, then we can switch back. So, it's not taken completely off the books, it will just be one of our reserve engines."
Stations six, 16, and 43 will also receive new engines in the coming weeks.
Each engine costs $614,000.
Today's christening involves washing the new engine with water from the engine it is replacing, followed by firefighters pushing the new engine into its new home.
In the last 14 years, the outgoing engine from Station 56 was dispatched 57,000 times and traveled 210,000 miles.
