A new fitness studio will be opening soon in midtown Sacramento where clients will help create renewable energy. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says the owners of Sacramento Eco Fitness plan to produce power via indoor cycling workouts.
"A micro-inverter will be used to harness human energy during those workouts and then convert it into usable power, which would be used to power the building," says Sorich.
The founder of the business says one cycling class could produce enough watts to power a refrigerator for an hour. The gym is expected to open in mid-December in a former storage warehouse on L Street near 19th Street.
A movie theater chain is suing the developer of the planned outlet mall in Elk Grove. Sorich says the lawsuit is over stalled plans for a Regal Cinemas movie theater at the site, off of Highway 99.
"It alleges that the mall's developer, the Howard Hughes Corp., required this movie theater operator to lease space elsewhere for a movie theater that it didn't want, in exchange for approving the Elk Grove lease," says Sorich.
The other location is in a Las Vegas suburb, near a movie theater that Regal already operated. The lawsuit alleges that the developer has delayed construction of the mall and that the mall's future is uncertain because of increased construction costs. The developer's representatives have not commented on the lawsuit.
Earlier this week, the Elk Grove City Council voted to scrap half of the Elk Grove Mall project in order to get construction on the other half started sooner. The council voted to approve sale of half of the project's land to the Wilton Rancheria Indian tribe, which would build a casino. The council says positive interest in the project has increased since prospective tenants learned a casino could be moving in next door. But, unknown opponents of the project are gathering signatures to put it before voters.
A new retail development is planned for a busy Sacramento intersection. It's at the northeast corner of Howe Avenue and Folsom Boulevard. Right now, the site is vacant. Sorich says a new 5,137 square-foot building is planned.
"We don't know too much about the plans or the timing," says Sorich. "But we do know that the building could have four tenants with a drive-thru at one end. And those tenants could include a coffee shop or a small restaurant."
The site is close to where Howe Avenue intersects with Highway 50. Other nearby businesses include a Home Depot, a fast-food restaurant and two gas stations.
After a ten-year delay, a mixed-use property on Sacramento's Stockton Boulevard is finally on the market. The 13-acre site, south of Elder Creek Road, already has finished buildings on it that have never been occupied. Observers say one reason for the delay is that the property fell victim to an out-of-town owner. Sorich says there's a new locally-based owner now.
"That owner is open to a variety of possibilities for the site which includes four buildings," says Sorich. "It could possibly be used as a campus of different sorts in the future."
She says the recession is another reason the development has stalled for so long.
