The man who is acting chancellor at UC Davis is also one of the founding members of a group helping gays and lesbians attain leadership positions at colleges and universities.

Ralph Hexter helped found the LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education to encourage schools to hire  gay and lesbian administrators to lead their schools.

According to him, there were about a dozen gay and lesbian school presidents nationwide when the group was created in 2010.

'"We formed this association in order to give more visibility and to help spread the message to boards who were selecting leaders that, you know, 'You wouldn't be the first,'" he says. "And, we're very proud that there are over 70 now -presidents who are members of our group."

Hexter was selected president of Hampshire College in 2005 and served until 2010.

In 2011, UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi hired him as UC Provost. He is acting chancellor while Katehi is under investigation for several policy violations.
