People fleeing the fire take their clothes, a few valuables and sometimes their pets.
But they can't take the pets with them to evacuation centers, so in Amador County almost 200 critters are being housed at the fairgrounds in Plymouth.
Amador County Animal Control Director Kelly Reason says half the animals usually live in a barn.
"Horses, sheep, goat are basically what we're seeing at this point, basically those animals that have had access to a trailer to be able to get them loaded," says Reason.
Reason says small critters are being taken care of too.
"Other small animals, I think I got a rat and a guinea pig and some rabbits and chickens," she says.
Reason says some owners had to turn their livestock loose when they evacuated.
Animal control officers are trying to locate and feed those animals.
