A plan to redevelop four blocks near the new Sacramento arena will go before the city council in two weeks. The Sacramento Commons project would bring more than 1,000 apartments and hotel rooms to the city.
The Capitol Tower high-rise would remain, but the other lots between Fifth and Seventh Streets and N and P Streets would be cleared to make room for one of two development options. Each would include at least 1,400 apartments and hotel rooms and 56,000 square feet of retail space.
Option one would include nearly 1,400 apartment and hotel rooms and 74,000 square feet of retail space. Option two would include nearly 1,500 apartments and hotel rooms and 56,000 square feet of retail space.
Both would include an increase of more than 1,000 parking spaces with the construction of two parking garages.
The Preservation Commission previously voted against the project because the buildings to be demolished are in a historical district. Also, 200 trees would be removed during demolition. Four are heritage trees.
The city's Community Development Department says the project would invigorate downtown with more people living, working and shopping in the city. New trees would be planted and the Overhoff Sculptural Wall would be relocated.
Update: We changed this story to state that the city council will likely look at this plan in two week.s
