Five hundred homes are threatened, but none have been destroyed. CalFire says the fire started in a remote area on Saturday, but exploded on Sunday when it reached a canyon full of thick, dry brush. Eight hundred firefighters are working to put the flames out.

The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at a middle school in the area.

Mandatory evacuations are in place for those living north of Forebay Road between Moon Lane and Elf Court.

The fire is 10 percent contained.

Another wildfire near Bass Lake in Central California has prompted the evacuation of about 1,000 people. Cal Fire says flames have damaged or destroyed 21 structures.
