Sacramento is one of 150 communities nationwide participating Tuesday in what's being called the "Big Day of Giving."
Linda Cutler is CEO of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. She says the nationwide event encourages donations between $25 and $10,000.
"We have 24 hours to hopefully reach our goal of $1 million raised online for nearly 400 non-profits," she says. "We're hoping that at least 5,000 donors will participate and that about 30-percent of those donations will be first-time donations to the organizations."
Cutler says she hopes Sacramento will improve its reputation for giving.
The website philanthropy.com says Sacramento-area households donate about $450 less than the national average. But, the same website also says the median income in the Sacramento area is about $4,000 below the national average.
Capital Public Radio is taking part in the event.
