Angelique Ashby has served as District 1’s City Council member since 2010. But the Vice Mayor isn’t running for reelection because she’s vying for the state Senate District 8 seat.

District 1 includes North Natomas, Sundance Lake, Regency Park and Glenwood Meadows.

It used to encompass more of Natomas, which was one of the region’s fastest growing neighborhoods, increasing nearly 26% in population from 2010 to 2020. Redistricting moved the Natomas Crossing neighborhood into District 3 with the rest of South Natomas.

As the representative for District 1, the council member votes on city policies, ordinances and land uses. The member also weighs in on Sacramento’s budget and contracts.

The council member serves on committees covering topics like transportation and additionally gets a say in hiring the city manager, city attorney, city treasurer and city clerk. The term lasts for four years.

Voters can choose from two candidates who advanced from the June primary:

Alyssa Lozano

Alyssa Lozano

A realtor who is currently the president of the Natomas Chamber of Commerce. Lozano, 43, has not held elected office before.

A lifelong Natomas resident, Lozano and her husband bought their first home in the area when she was 19 years old.

Lisa Kaplan

Lisa Kaplan

An attorney who has served on the Natomas Unified School District Board for 20 years. Kaplan, 47, was first elected to the board in 2002.

She runs Kaplan Law Group, which deals with school construction, and previously worked as a legislative director for state Assembly members.
