One person was arrested Monday in connection with a late-night weekend shooting in midtown Sacramento, police announced.

The shooting, which happened on J and 28th Streets — near popular midtown restaurants and bars such as Barwest, Red Rabbit and Centro Cocina Mexicana — is the third in the central city this year, following the K Street shooting in April and a shooting outside of Mix Nightclub in July; all three have resulted in at least one death.

The victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as 34-year-old Alfonso Martinez Jr., an Elk Grove resident.

The suspect, 23-year-old Michael Escobar, was arrested in West Sacramento and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

“This investigation remains active, and detectives will continue to work with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office to determine if additional charges may be filed,” police officials wrote in a press release.

Emily Baime Michaels, executive director of the Midtown Association, said the association is “heartbroken” to hear about another life lost to gun violence in the city.

“Midtown is a hub of culture, creativity and vibrancy where everyone is welcome,” Michaels wrote in a statement to CapRadio. “We must come together to uplift the good in the community and stand up against violence in every form.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Mike Hagerty contributed reporting to this story.
