Hidden Hunger

The View From Here: Hidden Hunger brings you first-person stories of people coping with food insecurity in one of the country's richest agricultural regions. Hidden Hunger explores the daily struggles of children, adults and seniors who live in overlooked neighborhoods of south Sacramento, where the stigma of poverty and hunger is high.

Hidden Hunger explores two neighborhoods: Meadowview and The Avenues, where lack of transportation limits access to affordable, healthy fresh food. The project raises awareness of the challenges facing those who live in these food deserts and examines local solutions to alleviate hunger.

Residents of a low-income neighborhood line up by the hundreds for free food distributed by Ebenezer Christian Center several times each month. Grocery stores are miles away. Transportation options are few in this urban food desert.

    Far From Plenty

    Julia Mitric

At John Still K-8 in Meadowview all 970 students qualify for free lunch. A school resource specialist hands out free bags of food from the on-site pantry. She wants each bag to link families to more resources.
