San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton was listed as the best community college in California and fourth in the nation in a new ranking.
The financial website WalletHub compared 700 community colleges for quality of education, cost and post-college success.
Delta College President Omid Pourzanjani says one factor of the school’s ranking is how students fare after graduation.
“How does all this education translate into job placement and wages?” Pourzanjani said. “As they use this education to get a better job, I think we can see there is a doubling of income when they finish.”
Tuition at California community colleges is free for full-time students for the first two years. And Pourzanjani says Delta is looking at other ways to bring down the cost even more.
“Lower the cost of textbooks, and additionally how do we deal with the homeless student population?” he said. “We want to make sure — it’s not just the tuition, that’s not the only thing that the students have to worry about. But it’s just the cost of living and affording the entire cost of going to college.”
Delta College also announced a record $368,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to 670 students this week — almost double the number from last year.
