Some of the rising stars of men’s pro tennis are coming to Stockton this weekend and next week. The $100,000 ATP Challenger will bring fans up close to the action on court.
Players among the top ranked 200 will be competing Oct. 1 through Oct. 9 at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center at the University of the Pacific.
Among them are the 2016 NCAA Champion in singles and doubles Mackie McDonald, and Benjamin Becker, the last man to beat tennis legend Andre Agassi.
Ryan Redondo with the UOP tennis program says one of the most impressive players will be 18-year old Frances Tiafoe, considered to be one of the U.S.’s next tennis stars.
“He was the No. 1 player in the juniors last year and the year before, so a bright American star that has also already shown promise and his ability to win at this level,” says Redondo.
Redondo says admission is free this weekend with players trying to qualify for the main draw.
He says also the tournament is looking for volunteers for ball boys and girls, or even adults who want to be on court.
