Sacramento City Council Approves Grants To Help Combat Gang Violence

The Sacramento City Council has approved grants to 18 different neighborhood organizations to help reduce gangs and violence.

Councilman Rick Jennings chairs the city's gang task force. He says this is the beginning of a long-term solution to the problem.

"We do have an issue in certain communities in Sacramento and if we don't start the process, and continue with the process -I would say a minimum of five years, we're not going to have the impact we want to have," says Jennings. "There were 36 agencies that wanted to be a part of this initiative. But, the funding only allowed us to fund 18."

The grants total $680,000 and were awarded to groups in the Del Paso Heights, Valley Hi, Oak Park and Fruitridge neighborhoods.

The money comes from a voter-approved Measure U sales tax.
