Arrest Made In Shooting Death Of Grant Union Football Player

Sacramento Police detectives say they have solved last November's murder of a Grant Union High School football player.

Police say Jaulon "JJ" Clavo was driving four of his teammates to a pre-game football meeting Nov. 13, 2015 and was stopped at an intersection when 16-year-old Keymontae Lindsey approached the car and fired several shots.

Officer Matt McPhail says the department arrested Lindsey for possession of a firearm during a routine traffic stop the next day, but detectives didn't know at the time he was the shooter.

"Through the forensic evidence, the determination was made that that firearm was in fact the same firearm that was used to commit the murder."

Lindsey was arrested the following day during a routine traffic stop and was arrested for possession of a firearm. He has been in Sacramento County Juvenile Hall since.

Detectives say the Sacramento County Crime Lab matched the gun to the bullets that hit Clavo and one of his teammates.

Although investigators initially were unable to contact any witnesses to the shooting, witnesses did eventually come forward, as did other people with information.  Lindsey was arrested this morning.

Clavo's mother, Dr. Nicole Clavo, says she visited her son's grave  when she learned of the arrest.

"I go by there every few days and I told him, you know, I'm working. I'm working tirelessly. I'm tired. I'm working hard.  But, we're going to find who did this to you. Today I was able to go tell him, 'The work is done.'"

Police say Lindsey has a gang affiliation, but Clavo did not and was not the target of the attack.

Dr. Clavo says she feels empathy for Lindsey's mother and hopes the community will increase efforts to understand and prevent the factors that contribute to gangs and gang violence.
