Lowell Fire: Crews Make Progress As Containment Grows

6:12 p.m. - CalFire is reporting the Lowell Fire is now at 2,303 acres and 50 percent contained. The First Baptist evacuation center will close at 9 a.m.

2:40 p.m. - The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services said on Twitter that that evacuation warnings from the Lowell Fire have been downgraded to advisories. 

The animal shelter at the fairgrounds will also close tonight, according to Nevada County OES.

2:20 p.m. - Cal Fire says a community meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Eric Rood Administration Center, 950 Maidu Ave. in Nevada City.

6:25 a.m. - Crews made some progress with the Lowell Fire in Nevada County overnight. The blaze is holding at 2,303 acres and is now 45 percent contained.

There are nearly 2,500 personnel working on this fire and about 1,800 residences in Placer and Nevada counties are being threatened.

Evacuation warnings are in effect for Red Dog Road east of Greenhorn Creek, You Bet Road east of Greenhorn Creek, Chalk Bluff from Brady Road to Buckeye Road, Buckeye Road to Lower Greenhorn Road, Lower Greenhorn Road from Buckeye Road to Banner Quaker Hill Road, Cascade Shores Community and Lower Hill Road from Preston Road to Negro Hill. 

Meanwhile, an evacuation advisory is in place for the Cascade Shores Community.

A shelter that was set up at the First Baptist Church will close by  9 a.m. Wednesday.

Road closures include:

Nevada County: Red Dog Road at Chalk Bluff Road, Red Dog Road at Buckeye Ridge, Banner Quaker at Lower Green Horn Road, Banner Quaker at Chalk Bluff and Lowell Hill Road at Mule Spring Road.

Placer County: Secret Town at Chicago Park Power House Road and Diggin Road at Main Street in Dutch Flat.
