Mayor's Office Addresses Private Email Questions

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson's office says it would welcome action by the California Legislature to address the use of private emails for public business.

Ben Sosenko with the mayor's office was a guest on Tuesday's Insight With Beth Ruyak.

"If a politician wants to use a ... an elected official wants to use a private email account, there's no city policy saying no and there's no state law saying no," he says. "We welcome the legislature working to clarify these issues. We look forward to that."

Sosenko maintains the mayor and city staff have only used private emails for private business, although several private emails regarding city negotiations with the Sacramento Kings are part of the public record. They are also part of a continuing court case.

Journalists from the Sacramento Bee, Sacramento News and Review and Capital Public Radio were also guests on Tuesday's Insight to talk about three ongoing court cases in Sacramento Superior Court that involve the mayor's private emails.
