Latvia's Toms Skujins of the Hincapie Racing team broke away from a breakaway to win a mountainous Stage Three of the Amgen Tour of California men's bicycle race Tuesday.

Skujins also took the title of race leader away from Mark Cavendish -who won the first two stages of the race Sunday and Monday.

Skujins will wear the yellow jersey signifying the leader when the riders begin Stage Four in Pismo Beach.

The fourth stage will take riders on a 2000 foot climb halfway through the race and a descent down to Avila Beach.

Slovakian Peter Sagan of Tinkoff Saxo and France's Julian Alaphilippe of Quick-Step Pro Cycling are second and third in the overall race.

Sagan has been second in every stage so far.
