A homeless camp has sprung up in the middle of the University of the Pacific in Stockton. Three dozen students are living in cardboard boxes. Capital Public Radio’s Rich Ibarra tells us they’re calling it a “Hit of Reality.”
The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Pacific is living outside…no money, no cars and no food just like the homeless.
When they get a meal, it’s thanks to other students who offer to share.
Pi Kappa Alpha President Franky Shepherd says the cause is to bring attention to the homeless by sharing their experience.
“I know a lot of our members currently have donated their time at the Stockton Homeless Shelter. I know 3 or 4 groups, we made trips down there, seen it, but this is another way we get to empathize with it and get to know exactly what it’s like, or at least, as close as we can make it.”
Shepherd says the event is also making money for the Stockton Homeless Shelter and over 7-thousand dollars in donations has been raised.
He says even though his fraternity brothers are living in cardboard shelters until Friday evening, they must still attend class.
