Snowden Makes Virtual Appearance At SXSW

Monday, March 10, 2014

Edward Snowden gives his first live video appearance today, since fleeing the United States in June with top-secret documents that have revealed the extent of mass surveillance by the National Security Agency.

He’s chosen to speak from an undisclosed location in Russia to technology experts at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival.

Snowden’s lawyer says he will be “reintroducing” himself and calling for better communications encryption systems to protect privacy.

While some hail Snowden as a hero, others — such as Kansas Republican Mike Pompeo — call Snowden a “traitor and common criminal” who deserves arrest, not celebrity, because he has compromised U.S. security.

Siobhan Gorman, the intelligence correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, speaks to Here & Now‘s Robin Young about what to expect from Snowden.
