Twitter’s getting some free press out former NSA chief Michael Hayden, who found out that everyday people can eavesdrop without a wiretap. During a three-hour train ride from Washington, D.C., to New York, Hayden was heard talking on the phone to journalists by fellow passenger Tom Matzzie, who started live tweeting the conversations:
“On Acela listening to former NSA spy boss Michael Hayden give “off record” interviews. I feel like I’m in the NSA. Except I’m in public.”
Michael Hayden on Acela giving reporters disparaging quotes about admin. “Remember, just refer as former senior admin” #exNSAneedsadayjob
This morning, Matzzie told Huffington Post, “The thing that caught my ear is that he was saying things like rendition, black sites, that was interesting.”
Matzzie was surprised that Hayden wasn’t catching on, and tweeted:
I think I’m safe. Just passed Philly. No rendition yet. Do I have the balls to ask him for a photo? #haydenacela
But pretty soon, the jig was up. Hayden told The Washington Post that he didn’t criticize the president, he just said that they were dealing with “difficult issues.”
It seems like there were no hard feelings. Hayden even posed for a photo with Matzzie, which of course he immediately tweeted.
