In Celebration of Women’s History Month, CapRadio will present nightly broadcasts on KXPR (88.9 FM) during the entire month of March that will spotlight the legendary female instrumentalists and vocalists who paved the way in the artform during the ‘50’s and ‘60’s.
While singers such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald rose to prominence, female instrumentalists and composers have received much less recognition in a genre that has largely been dominated by men. Among the game changers who overcame systemic roadblocks, Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland, Toshiko Akiyoshi and Nina Simone will be profiled.
We’ll also be featuring todays’ most celebrated contemporary composers and instrumentalists, including Terri Lyne Carrington, Alexa Tarantino and Melissa Aldana, as well as rising stars Nicole Glover, Chien Chien Lu and Roxy Coss.
Born in America, jazz is now practiced worldwide. We’ll be featuring Belgian composer Miriam Alter, Canadian guitarist Jocelyn Gould, Italian saxophonist Ada Rovatti, Korean pianist Hey Rim Jeon and Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen. On Monday March 3rd, we featured Japanese women in jazz!
We’ll also have several birthday tributes, including Carol Sloane (March 5), Jessica Williams (March 17), Eliane Elias (March 19), Marian McPartland (March 20), Hiromi (March 26) and Sarah Vaughan (March 27). Be sure to join us weeknights at 7 and weekends at 6 for Excellence In Jazz during Women’s History Month!
Finally, we kicked off the month by featuring, among others, the all women Blue Note jazz band ARTEMIS. The group is led by pianist Renee Rosnes and has just released their third record called “Arboresque”. In 2016, Rosnes first assembled the band to celebrate International Women’s Day with live performances in Europe. Nine years later, they are still putting out fresh and exciting material as well as proving how the music transcends any notion of the patriarchy. Check out the new album and be sure to listen for it on Excellence In Jazz!
