Northern California holiday travelers are being warned of heavy precipitation causing flood risks and snowy mountain driving conditions this week, with the major storm starting Tuesday night and lasting through Friday.
Starting Wednesday, there will be major impacts to mountain travel, with heavy snow down to 4,500 feet and high winds, according to Courtney Carpenter, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento.
“Christmas Eve and Christmas Day you’re going to see a substantial amount of snow across our mountain passes, so we’ll likely see difficult travel conditions especially with holiday traffic and low visibility,” Carpenter said in a Monday morning weather briefing.
The high amount of moisture in this system will bring a particularly heavy, wet snow, she added. “It will be that ‘Sierra cement,’ which will likely cause impacts,” she said.
