We here at SacramenKnow headquarters have been busy thinking about the perfect City of Trees-themed activities for your loved ones.
Whether you’re celebrating with friends, partner or chosen family, we hope these suggestions help you feel the love this Valentine’s Day.
My partner recently gifted me a staycation on the Delta King, which was perfect for the Sacramento history nerd in me. While we were there, we tied in a bunch of other Old Sacramento attractions, like drinks at Fanny Ann’s Saloon, a trip to Evangeline’s, and an underground tour. I highly recommend playing tourist in your own city!

Though I get why some people don’t love Valentine’s Day — it’s a commercial holiday, consumers are projected to spend $27.5 billion on the holiday this year alone — I take any opportunity to decorate and gift on a theme. My favorite place to get Sacramento-made gifts for everyone on my list is Constellation Marketplace on R Street. —Claire Morgan, Former Communities Editor
If you’re celebrating alone this year, consider taking yourself on a date. My go-to self-care activity is a trip to Asha Urban Baths near Broadway — just don’t forget to bring a book! And if you’re a yarn-lover like me, take a drive out to Fair Oaks for a trip to Babetta’s Yarn and Gifts — she’s got a huge selection.

Looking for the perfect date location in the City of Trees? One place I like is Punch Bowl Social in DOCO. If you’re looking for a place to have fun, this is the perfect spot: They have bowling, karaoke, darts, cornhole, multiple bars and more.

While you’re at DOCO, you can pick up some sweet treats — for yourself or others — next door at It’Sugar. Ever wanted to play a Sacramento-themed mini golf course? Tipsy Putt — also in DOCO — has you covered. And for dinner, I highly recommend the Echo & Rig steakhouse. I’ve been there a few times and they have several types of steak that pair well with garlic chips and fried mushrooms.

Another spot just a bit of a drive from Sacramento: Top Golf in Roseville. The fun part of Top Golf is that you don’t have to be good at golf; you just have to have fun. This is a perfect place to visit if you and your loved ones are competitive. If mini golf is more your speed, I highly recommend the Underground mini golf course in Old Sacramento.

When I moved here with my partner in 2018, dates were a rarity that we cherished. We were starting college, so balancing work, school and free time was practically impossible. Cheap dates became a necessity, and we got good at managing the classic dinner and a movie every couple of weeks. If you’re on a budget this Valentine’s Day, consider taking a tip from a younger me who didn’t realize how fondly he’d be looking back at those days.
Our go-to for cheap dinners were — and still are — local taco shops like Taqueria Ay Jalisco, Chando’s Tacos and Tapatío Brothers. Although prices have gone up, we’re usually able to keep costs under $20 for both of us.

We love the Tower Theatre — Sacramento’s oldest movie theater — or the West Wind Drive-In, both of which cost anywhere from $20 to $30 for two people.

Babe’s Ice Cream and Donuts on J Street is our go-to for dessert. The business is 100% gluten-free and vegan so feel free to bring your lactose-intolerant or gluten-sensitive friends and family to try a maple cruller donut or tiramisu ice cream. If you’d rather have gluten and dairy, consider visiting Salt & Straw at the Ice Blocks.
