Since 2018, 84 percent of school bond measures put before voters in the state of California have passed, according to Ballotpedia. But that number seems destined to drop after Tuesday's primary, where a number of requests for bond funding in counties within the Sacramento region appear to be on their way to defeat.
In addition, many races for elected office are too close to call.
Here's a look at major races in the region.
Placer County
The early results in the supervisors' races shows Jim Holmes with a majority of the vote in the 3rd District over Mike Murray and Craig Del Greco. If that holds, Holmes will not have to go to a runoff.
In District 4, Kirk Uhler has a slim advantage of 3 percentage points over Suzanne Jones. In District 5, Cindy Gufstafson is leading Christopher Kershner by a three-to-one margin.
All of the school bonds in the county are failing.
Measure A for the Eureka Union School District is losing 40-60 percent. Measure B for the Colfax Elementary School District is losing 45-55 percent. Measure D for the Western Placer Unified School District is losing 31-69 percent.
Placer County says it has about 20,000 ballots remaining to count, including an unknown number of vote-by-mail ballots that have until Friday to arrive in order to be counted.
El Dorado County
El Dorado County has school bond measures failing there, too:
- El Dorado Union Measure A is losing 37-63 percent.
- Measure H for Black Oak Mine is losing 42-58 percent.
- Rescue Union Measure G down 38-62 percent.
It’s not just school bonds that are struggling. The Lake Valley Fire Protection Measure B is leading 59-41 percent, but needs two-thirds to pass. Kelsey Cemetery District Measure C is down 47-53 percent.
In El Dorado County Supervisor District 1, that race appears headed to a runoff. John Hidahl leads, but is at 45 percent, which is short of the majority needed for an outright win. Ron Briggs and Benjamin Paulsen are bidding for the second spot and a November runoff.
District 2 had six candidates. Right now, George Turnboo and Ken Pimlott are leading the pack, but Felicity Carlson and Ray Nutting are close behind. Pimlott is the retired director of Cal Fire.
In District 3 Wendy Thomas is leading 60-40 percent.
Yolo County
In Yolo County, a couple of races are too close to call or may go to a runoff.
For the District 4 supervisor seat, Jim Provenza has just over 49 percent of the vote which would put him in a runoff with Linda Deos if things stay the same. In District 5, Duane Chamberlain leads Angel Barajas by 93 votes.
For the city council in Winters, Bill Biasi and Jesse Loren appear to have won seats there.
The $220 million Yuba Community College Measure College Measure C is failing in all seven counties the district touches: Yuba, Yolo, Sutter, Lake, Placer Butte, and Glenn.
In Davis, a renewal of a 1 percent sales tax through Measure Q is passing with 80 percent support. Measure G, public schools parcel tax, has 65 percent of the vote. It needs two-thirds to pass.
