For the next 10 days, the streets of Sacramento will run with beer.
It’s time for the 10th annual Sacramento Beer Week: Stouts, pilsners, pale ales — all in ample supply at hundreds of events throughout the region.
Event director Kate Whelan says Sacramento’s beer scene has grown from a half-dozen breweries in the early 2000s to more than 70. And with the growth has come diversity, she says.
“We actually have quite a bit of variety here in the Sacramento area and if you’re interested in trappist beers, we’ve got Monk Cellar. If you like stouts, New Glory is really great at that,” Whelan said. “So there’s a lot of different beer choices here. You can really travel and explore.”
The week starts with a mac ’n’ cheese tasting party on Friday night in West Sacramento and wraps up in 10 days with the brewers dinner on May 5.
Whelan says brewmakers are raising the profile of beer and introducing new concoctions to people who hadn’t considered beer as a beverage worthy of their time.
“Beer has kind of been seen as kind of low-class beverage and we’re starting to see some of these amazing breweries put out some really incredible high-end beer,” she said.
Brew makers from Sacramento — as well as Newcastle, Fairfield, and Lake Tahoe — are taking part.
