More than a thousand people are expected to hop on their bicycles on Saturday for the 34th annual Bike Around The Buttes event.
Riley Vanevenhoven is co-owner of Vans Bicycle Center, which has helped put on the event since its inception. He says it’s less of a race — and more of a ride.
And he says any bike will do. “Even if it’s a mountain bike, even if it’s a beach cruiser,” Vanevenhoven said. “My mom and sister do it every couple of years in their beach cruisers.”
But he advised to not “pull your bikes out of the garage the day before the ride, because that’s a mistake a lot of people make” and the bike could need some work.
This year, a 65-mile ride was added to the 100-, 40- and 20-mile rides.
“A lot of people are intimidated if they don’t know a lot about cycling. They think, ‘Oh, man. I can’t do 20 miles. That’s a lot,’” he said. “It’s really not. Anyone can do the 20.”
The event raises money for people with type I and type II diabetes, and Vanevenhoven says the proceeds go to local charities.
“It’s always important to be involved in the community and get involved as much as you can,” he said.
Ride Around The Buttes is one of two local cycling events. The other, Ride For Awareness, benefits breast cancer causes and is held in the fall.
