The city of Sacramento is fast-tracking a request by High Times Magazine to hold a cannabis event at Cal Expo in October.
Joe Devlin, Chief of Cannabis Policy and Enforcement for Sacramento, says the city and the magazine have been in frequent talks about the outstanding debt, which has now been paid off in full.
"The High Times parent company (High Times Holding Corp.) as I understand it was going through a public offering process in becoming a publicly traded company and were going through an escrow process," Devlin said. "They currently do have, at least as of last week … an outstanding tax liability with the city."
The city of Sacramento took the unusual step of putting the request for permits on the Law and Legislation Committee docket Thursday, the same day as the council's docket. If the committee approves, the first reading of the proposal by the full council won’t be delayed a week, as is typical with most proposals brought before council.
If the city council approves, the next cannabis festival at Cal Expo would be held Oct. 25.
This story has been updated after High Times paid off their tax bill to city in full.
