Sac State Players And Staff To Supply Aid To Puerto Rico

The Sacramento State Women's Basketball team will be in Puerto Rico next week to play and to aid...handing out supplies to survivors of Hurricane Maria.

Semarhy Quinones-Soto is the director of the Student Research Center at Sacramento State and is coordinator of the relief effort. She will be visiting her alma mater, the University of Puerto Rico Humacao.

"They have lost their housing," Qiunonos-Soto says. "They need supplies. They are scrounging around trying to finish their semester."

Quinones-Soto won't be alone. The women's basketball team was already scheduled to play a tournament in Puerto Rico and will visit the school on Thursday.

Kyhonta Doughty is a senior. Twelve years ago, she was a child in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. She hopes her experience will inspire others.

"I survived that and I was able to conquer that," Doughty says, "and now I'm able to pass on that experience and help people understand that everything you have can be taken in an instant and you can't necessarily control that. So, don't blame yourself or don't be too down on yourself because it's not your fault this happened to you."

Quinones-Soto and her brother have raised $4500 for the effort. The basketball team will also be donating items they have collected.
