A trio of runners lead the pack at the 20-mile mark of the California International Marathon, Dec. 7, 2104 in Sacramento. Jacob Chemtai, center (No. 9), was the race winner.

The 35th annual California International Marathon is this Sunday in Sacramento. The 26.2 mile CIM stretches from Folsom Dam to the State Capitol building. Around 11,000 people have signed-up to run the full marathon, along with 7,000 relay runners and 5k participants.

The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says a lot of those runners are from out-of-town and will be spending money on places to eat, sleep and shop.

"Officials expect an economic impact of $11 million," says Sorich. "And people coming to town for Sunday's race are expected to fill more than 7,500 hotel rooms."

CIM ranks as the 13th largest marathon in the country. Race organizers hope to jump ahead of the Chevron Houston Marathon, Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota and the San Francisco Marathon to crack the top 10 this year.

Major League Soccer officials announced this week that Sacramento is one of four finalists for an expansion team

"Outside observers are still pretty confident in Sacramento's chances," says Sorich. "After the announcement, the publisher of Soccer America, an online soccer quarterly, said Sacramento has made the best case for a team."

Sacramento and the other cities — Cincinnati, Detroit and Nashville — will present their formal expansion bids to the legaues committee on Dec 6.

A well-known Sacramento area eatery is expanding. Sorich says Buckhorn Grill is opening a site in Folsom.

"This week, the city's web site confirmed that the business is planning a location in Folsom's Palladio at Broadstone," says Sorich. "This will be the 13th location for the business. It was started in 1999 by the operators of Buckhorn Steakhouse in Winters."

The Folsom restaurant would be in addition to current sites throughout the region including midtown Sacramento, Roseville, and three in San Francisco.

Sorich says Buckhorn is one of several new dining additions at Palladio at Broadstone.

"A Brazilian steakhouse is also in the works and Back Bistro, a locally owned wine bistro, is relocating within Folsom to the Palladio and is expected to open there next year. Late last year, the center's dining lineup got a big boost when Barnes & Noble opened its cafe concept there."

Palladio struggled to fill retail spaces when it first opened...around the same time the economy crashed.
