Record-Breaking Heat Continues Through Week Of Triple-Digit Weather

UPDATE Monday 7:10 a.m.: Record-breaking heat is expected to hit again Monday, as a week-long streak of triple-digit temperatures continues.

Some of Sunday's record highs include 108 for Stockton, 106 for Sacramento, and 105 for Modesto. The warm overnight low temperatures also hit records in some cases.

David Rowe is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento and says a combination of factors makes this a dangerous period.

Rowe says this heat is with us at least through mid-week.

Temperatures in the Sacramento area should drop into the upper 90s by the end of the week, but that's still above normal.

Forecasting shows a continued drop beyond that, but he says it's too early to put much faith in those numbers.

UPDATE June 17, 11:21 a.m.: The National Weather Service says an excessive heat warning for northern California is now in effect through next Wednesday.

The agency says valley high temperatures between 105 and 110 degrees are expected Sunday through Wednesday.

Heat Risk [8]

Original Post, June 16: The National Weather Service is urging people in the Sacramento Valley to beat the heat. A week of triple digit temperatures combined with a weaker than usual Delta Breeze will leave the Sacramento Valley warm around the clock.

Eric Kurth is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

"Right now we're not seeing much of a strong Delta Breeze at all," says Kurth. "What we are seeing, it looks like it's going to be pretty weak. It's going to be a factor in keeping those overnight lows quite warm. There's just not going to be an influx of cool marine air."

The Weather Service is also cautioning that snow melt from the Sierra will make rivers extra cold, which could make swimming more dangerous.
