The guys behind two midtown Sacramento restaurants - LowBrau and Block Butcher Bar - have announced plans for a new restaurant.
It'll be located in the Ice Blocks — a mixed-use development under construction at 16th and R streets. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says the new restaurant will be called Beast and Bounty.
"The new eatery will aim to find a common denominator between carnivores and herbivores," says Sorich. "It will fill about 2,500 square feet in the Ice Blocks. It will have features such as an exhibition kitchen. And the restaurant could open by early September."
So far, other food-related businesses announced for Ice Blocks have been cafe-style concepts: Pressed Juicery and Philz Coffee. National retailer West Elm, which sells home furnishings, is also coming to the project.
A group of Sacramento developers has bought a building near Golden 1 Center that the San Francisco-based sporting goods retailer Sports Basement once planned to fill. Sorich says this latest development likely means the company has dropped those plans.
"It looks like the retailer just couldn't make the numbers work for a local store," says Sorich. "We see that brick and mortar retailers are facing lots of challenges right now. And some sporting goods stores such as Sports Authority and Sports Chalet have been hit particularly hard by those challenges."
The partnership that bought the three-story building at 730 I Street includes executives with D&S Development. No plans for the building have been announced yet...but options might include: office, retail, residential and even hotel uses.
An international chain of frozen yogurt stores has announced plans to open its first Sacramento-area site. Sorich says the business is called Chillbox and it's from Greece.
"Chillbox is aimed largely at health-conscious consumers," says Sorich. "It's Greek frozen yogurt isn't only designed as a dessert. The local store is expected to open at 7 a.m. daily."
That store will be near Cosumnes River College. It will join three other Chillbox locations in the U.S., all of which are on the East Coast.
A couple of exercise studios in midtown Sacramento are growing. Humani Pilates near 20th and I streets recently finished an expansion that more than doubled its size. And Zuda Yoga near 19th and O streets is building a gathering space. Sorich says the projects indicate a larger trend.
"Anecdotally, there's some evidence that interest in yoga and meditation has grown as national political tension has escalated," says Sorich. "But beyond that, there's also evidence that people are simply buying less stuff and looking for fulfillment through experiences instead of things."
Humani Pilates will use its expanded location to become a wellness space that hosts meditation classes and workshops.
