NWS Pulled Tornado Warning For Nevada And Yuba Counties, Snowstorm Hits Sierra

UPDATE 4:04 p.m.: The National Weather Service pulled its tornado warning for Nevada County following an hour or so of severe weather for the Sacramento region.

Just past three o'clock Thursday, Doppler radar indicated rotation within a thunderstorm cell, west of Grass Valley.

At this point, an actual tornado has not been reported.

Funnel clouds, hail, downpours, strong winds, and lightening have been reported throughout the Sacramento Valley though.

Placer County currently has some strong storm cells.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Sierra Nevada through eight o'clock Thursday, as the storm cells move east.

Up to eight inches of additional snowfall is expected about 4,500 feet.


 

UPDATE 3:16 p.m.: A tornado warning has been issued for parts of Nevada and Yuba counties.

A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Smartville, about 12 miles west of Grass Valley, moving northeast at 25 mile-an-hour.

Radar indicated rotation about 20 minutes ago.

Damaging winds are expected.

Meteorologists also say a funnel cloud was spotted this afternoon in Rancho Cordova, and storm cells capable of producing half-inch-sized hail were reported from Redding to Folsom.

Interstate 80 was closed in both directions over Donner Pass this afternoon because of excessive snowfall.


Original Post: The tail end of the latest storm system to pass over Northern California is bringing unsettled weather to the area Thursday.

A severe thunderstorm warning for Nevada and Yuba counties was in effect until 3:15 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento says a funnel cloud was spotted this afternoon in Rancho Cordova, and storm cells capable of producing half-inch-sized hail were reported from Redding to Folsom.

Interstate 80 was closed in both directions over Donner Pass Thursday afternoon because of excessive snowfall.

The Weather Service office in Reno says strong wind gusts are expected to continue through the weekend, with another storm system arriving on Sunday.
