(AP) - University of California President Janet Napolitano is crossing the border next week with a message of friendship for Mexico: That America should not isolate its neighbor. She clearly hopes it will resonate in Washington, DC.

Napolitano's spokeswoman, Dianne Klein, says the trip is meant to reassure Mexico that UC campuses remain committed to academic and research collaboration despite the Trump administration's plan to build a border wall and decrease federal research funding.

On the 3-day trip, Napolitano is scheduled to meet with the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, speak to the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce and visit with students in Mexico and business leaders.

Napolitano launched the UC-Mexico Initiative in 2014 to coordinate research, academic programs and student exchanges between Mexico and the UC's 10 campuses.
