(AP) - A San Diego judge has deemed a man charged with carrying out a string of deadly attacks on sleeping homeless men to be mentally competent to stand trial.

Judge Steven Stone on Monday ordered Jon David Guerrero to return to court April 4th for arraignment.

The 40-year-old faces murder and attempted murder charges in the attacks last July. The men were set afire or had railroad spikes driven into their bodies. Three of the victims died.

The Union-Tribune newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/2o02ajB ) Guerrero returned to San Diego from Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino County in January.

Court records show Guerrero has been diagnosed in the past with schizophrenia. He has a history of arrests and mental competency hearings, including orders to be sent to a state hospital for treatment.
