Sacramento Beer Week began Thursday. The week is actually 11 days of events and festivities, including a 5K run in the Land Park neighborhood tomorrow. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says a lot of breweries throughout the region take part.
"Sacramento Beer Week isn't associated only with the city of Sacramento," says Sorich. "There's an event devoted to sour beers this weekend in El Dorado Hills and even a beer and cupcake pairing coming up in Roseville and many more activities beyond that."
There are now more than 800 breweries throughout California, according to numbers released this week by the California Craft Brewers Association. Sacramento Beer Week runs through March 12.
A restaurant in midtown Sacramento that opened last summer has already shut its doors. Sorich says Saddle Rock closed Feb. 25.
"Local restaurateur Chris Jarosz, who is an owner of Saddle Rock, basically said that he is focusing on some of his other upcoming projects," says Sorich. "That includes expanding the Broderick Roadhouse brand, which is also his."
Broderick has three new sites in the works in Folsom, Roseville and Howe Avenue. Saddle Rock was located at L and 18th streets in a space previously filled by another eatery called Capital Dime.
The Japanese discount store Daiso is expanding in the Sacramento area. Sorich says the company opened a store in the Roseville Galleria last February that was relatively small at 3,600 square feet.
"Now it looks like Daiso has two larger local stores in the works," says Sorich. "The company is apparently planning a store with more than 7,000 square feet in south Sacramento's Delta Shores center and one with more than 8,000 square feet in Natomas."
Most of Daiso's products come from Japan, cost about $1.50 and range from stationery to cleaning supplies. The retailer has been known to attract long lines at its store openings.
Roseville-based public charter school John Adams Academy is opening a location in El Dorado Hills. The school is reportedly negotiating to buy a two-story office building in the El Dorado Hills business park. Sorich says the academy opened its Roseville campus in 2011.
"And it's had a variety of notable developments since then," says Sorich. "It purchased its Roseville campus in 2014. About a year later, the school announced plans to buy and fill the former Heald College building in Roseville. It's also building a school in Lincoln."
The school offers what it calls a classical liberal arts curriculum combined with servant leadership training.
